After years of use, the shift cable tends to stretch causing the need for adjustment and realignment. When the shift cable is in the forward position, the cable will be pulled inside the sheathing at the shift plate.
When it is placed in reverse, the cable will become fully extended. Remove the engine cover and locate the shift control plate assembly on the left rear portion of the engine. Examine the condition of the cable and connections. Clean any corrosion from the surfaces with a stiff brush. Wipe the area clean with a shop towel. Find the shift lever stud on the left side of the shift plate and see if it is located at the bottom of the slide opening. Loosen the nut using an open end wrench and push the stud down with your fingers as you re-tighten it if it is not in the lowest position.
Have your assistant carefully grasp the propeller with his hands and rotate it counterclockwise as you gently shift the operator controls into the forward wide open throttle position. The propeller shaft will stop when the forward clutch has been engaged. Pull gently on the plastic cover over the shift cable near the shift lever stud to remove any slack left in the cable. Remove the clevis pin and brass barrel from the shift plate and rotate the barrel until the excess cable has been removed.
The clevis pin hole will be aligned with the end of the shift cable when the proper adjustment has been made. Rotate the brass barrel away from the plastic cable guide four complete turns after the alignment has been made and place the barrel and end of the cable end back on their positions on the shift plate.
Reinstall the clevis pin and retaining nuts. Have your assistant grasp the propeller again with his hands and rotate it clockwise as you shift the controls into the reverse wide open throttle position.
The propeller shaft will stop when the reverse clutch has been engaged. Loosen the shift lever stud with an open end wrench if the clutch did not engage in Step 6. This is the same stud you adjusted in Step 2. Push the stud slightly upward and re-tighten it. Repeat Step 6 and continue the process until you have full reverse clutch engagement.

I have a with the Yamaha and the factory adjustment on the throttle is too loose. Anyone have an idea where the adjustment is. I live in Mexico so the dealer is out of the question. How do you tighten the throttle adjustment for a Yamaha control. I pulled the rubber plug from the center of the gear release and there were three screws there but that gave me access to nothing.

Pescador, If I remember right from my Bay the screw in the center of the three is the one that tightens or loosens the friction on the throttle lever so that it doesn't drop back when you are running while on plane.

I know my Bay was always doing that and I used to have to re-adjust that screw all the time to tighten the throttle friction to hold the lever tight so I didn't have to keep my hand on it.
I hope that was what you were asking about. Under that is a metal plate with two screws on each side of the black gearshift disengager. When I tighten or loosen those screws, nothing changes. I think that these simply attach the plate which covers the gears in that area.

Coconut Sunrise. When putting it back together I seem to have got the Shift adjustment out. I originally had to remove the shift lock nut to remove rod coming down from tilt area. I have NOT touched any linkage above that Linkage nut, the engine is a Tiller Steer model with shifter on front of the motor.

Also what is the Spring loaded rod coming from the tilt area For? If the shift linkage is not assembled correctly then isn't an "adjustment" needed to get the linkage assembled correctly? But I would agree with the procedure. Lower unit in reverse gear and shift lever in reverse gear. Run the barrel nut up the shift rod. Run the jam nut down the shift cam assembly.
How to Adjust the Shift Cable on a Yamaha Outboard Motor
Install the lower unit. Run the barrel nut down the shift rod until it is half on the shift rod and half on the shift cam assembly. Position the shift lever into forward gear or wherever it needs to be to get access to the jam nut. Run the jam nut up until it is tight. Test for proper forward, neutral and reverse gear operation.
This is an old thread I know but im running to the same problem stated here. The barrel nut is the large brass nut coming from the engine correct? Follow the instructions given above in this thread and you shouldn't haven't a problem disconnecting and connecting it back up.
Sometimes you may have to go a turn or two one way or another to get the engine shift correctly. So I followed the procedure above and now no matter where of how I adjust it it will not stay out of forward.
Take the lower unit back off, check and see if it shifts properly, be careful not to pull up too hard on the shift shaft when doing this as you don't want to pull it out of the gear case If the lower unit shifts properly when off the engine then reinstall it following the exact instructions that was given by Rodbolt earlier in this thread.

Previous 1 2 template Next. I noticed that when going from reverse to neutral, the binnace clicks and the electronics key switch thinks it's in neutral. But apparently the drive stays engaged in reverse. If I go to forward and then back into neutral it goes back to true neutral. We'll as a test I put the boat in forward and then Neutral and marked where the lever was.
Black mark I then put it in reverse and then in neutral so I could see where it was stopping Seems that the cable might have a bit of slack in it It did make it move easier.
But still didn't disengage reverse.

Now, back at the engine, you may have to spin the prop not running and manipulate the actual shifter that the cable WAS attached to. Everything is aligned properly If its off a bit, there should be a lock-nut on the shifter cable.

Is it possible to adjust this out or is it just the clutch dog?
I haven't tried adjusting it yet because I don't want to mess it up. Also if the engine is in forward am I supposed to be able to spin the prop backwards? I can't do that, but some things I've read about other lower units say that you can spin the prop backwards and it sort of rachets. Thanks for any help. Tags: None. Probably the dog clutches just barely touching each other when in neutral When in fwd you should be able to rock the prop back and forth say degrees.
That is the gap between the "dogs" on the clutch when ingaged. As for turning it backwards I never seen one in my limited experience that would Rachet backwards Comment Post Cancel. If they are binding, you may not be shifting completely into neutral.
